Futures associated with the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced an uptick early Thursday following the blue-chip index’s closure at a record high, as investors anticipated another wave of corporate earnings reports. Dow futures increased by 178 points, reflecting a rise of 0.33%. S&P 500 futures increased by 0.14%, whereas Nasdaq 100 futures declined by 0.48%. Wall Street anticipates a bustling day of earnings on Thursday, with Warner Bros. Discovery scheduled to report before the market opens. Airbnb and Lyft are scheduled to announce their earnings following the market close. Meanwhile, the initial lockup period for SpaceX shares is approaching its expiration, with more than 900 million shares ready to enter the market.

The staggered approach provides initial investors with their first chance to divest, potentially exerting downward pressure on the share price. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 concluded the trading session down by 0.93%, whereas South Korea’s Kospi experienced a decline of 4.58%. Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 experienced an increase of 0.47%, while mainland China’s CSI 300 concluded the trading session with a decline of 0.15%. European stocks commenced trading on Thursday in a generally favourable position, as technology shares on the continent found stability following the recent sell-off in Asia.

In regular trading, the Dow rose 263.24 points, or 0.49%, marking a record close and its fifth consecutive positive day. The S&P 500 experienced a decline of 0.17%, effectively ending its four-day winning streak. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.83%. Investors have been buoyed by indications that tensions in the Middle East may be subsiding, leading to a recent cooling trend in oil prices. However, inflation remains a central concern for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, who stated on Wednesday that she is “prepared to act” on an interest rate hike unless indications of ongoing disinflation materialise.

“With five years of above-target inflation, the risk grows that higher inflation may become entrenched in price- and wage-setting behavior, leading to persistence that would be much harder for us to attack,” she said during a speech in Anchorage, Alaska. “The longer inflation is above target, the more likely this scenario becomes.” On Thursday morning, the release of weekly jobless claims will provide important insights into the labour market dynamics. The primary focus will be the payrolls report for July, scheduled for release on Friday morning.
