S&P Futures Updates

S&P futures exhibited minimal fluctuations on Thursday, as market participants kept a close eye on Treasury yields and oil prices, while anticipating new U.S. employment data scheduled for later in the week. S&P 500 futures exhibited little movement, remaining flat, whereas Nasdaq-100 futures experienced a decline of 0.2%.Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a slight increase. Oil prices experienced an uptick, with WTI crude advancing by 2% and momentarily surpassing $93 per barrel. Brent futures increased by over 1%, surpassing the $97 mark. Rising crude has exerted upward pressure on Treasury yields recently, as investors express concern that elevated energy prices could drive inflation and compel the Federal Reserve to raise rates.

However, U.S. yields remained relatively unchanged on the day as the Japanese yen appreciated against the U.S. dollar. “A stronger JPY could be the thread that helps unravel a lot of the macro overhangs weighing on equities to the extent it continues (a sustained rally in the yen would in theory remove upward pressure from global yields),” wrote Adam Crisafulli. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield remained steady at approximately 4.78%. The yen was last observed appreciating by over 1% relative to the dollar, standing at 156.34 yen.

Wall Street has concluded a successful trading session, as the primary U.S. stock indexes have ended their three-day streak of losses. The 2-year Treasury yield reached 4.41%, marking the highest level observed since January 2025. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly reached 4.818%, marking the highest level since November 2023.Both concluded the day below their peak levels, however. Despite investor concerns regarding inflation, New York Federal Reserve President John Williams conveyed on Wednesday that he perceives the rise in Treasury yields as a consequence of robust economic prospects, following unprecedented corporate profits in the second quarter.
