S&P Futures Updates

S&P futures declined on Thursday, as investors encountered increased pressure from rising Treasury yields and elevated oil prices. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 410 points, representing a decrease of 0.8%. S&P 500 futures experienced a decline of 0.4%, while Nasdaq-100 futures fell by 0.6%. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield increased by 6 basis points to 5.345%, reaching levels reminiscent of 2002. The 30-year Treasury bond yield was observed trading close to levels not seen in 24 years, registering at 5.726%.

Those moves occurred as oil prices surged following President Donald Trump’s statement indicating a reluctance to negotiate with Iran to conclude the conflict, while reports suggest that the U.S. is gearing up for extensive bombing operations in the Middle East. Brent crude experienced a significant increase of 4.6%, reaching $104.82 per barrel. WTI futures, meanwhile, advanced 4.5% to $92.23. Yields and oil have heightened volatility in equities recently, as apprehension mounts that increased energy prices will sustain elevated inflation and compel the Federal Reserve to implement additional rate hikes. Many investors are sustaining an optimistic outlook on the stock market, however. There is an expectation that the commencement of earnings season may provide the market with the impetus required for its subsequent upward movement.

In the third quarter, the S&P 500 is anticipated to report a blended earnings growth rate of approximately 30%, marking the third consecutive quarter of earnings growth exceeding 25%, as per sources. “If earnings remain strong, and the idea is that they probably will, if expectations are met and/or higher, that is going to sustain this rally – despite the fact that rates are higher,” Courtney Garcia told. “It’s not going to derail the market.” On Thursday, investors will be looking forward to the results from PepsiCo prior to the market opening. Market participants will closely monitor the forthcoming weekly jobless claims data.

Across the Atlantic, the pan-European Stoxx 600 experienced a decline of 0.85% during morning trading. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 experienced a decline of 0.44%, whereas France’s CAC 40 recorded a decrease of 0.81%. The German DAX experienced a decline of 0.77%, while Italy’s FTSE MIB recorded a decrease of 0.98%. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 concluded the trading session down by 1.42%, whereas South Korea’s Kospi experienced a decline of 2.62%. Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 experienced a decline of 0.77%, while mainland China’s CSI 300 saw a decrease of 1.09%.
