Shares of discount retailers are experiencing a decline today following a warning from analysts, who indicated in a note that increasing diesel prices may exert pressure on profits throughout the second half of the year and extending into 2027. With third-quarter diesel prices increasing approximately 60% compared to the previous year, analysts project that the average impact on operating margin will escalate to around 27 basis points, up from 18 basis points in the second quarter.
The drag on earnings per share is anticipated to increase significantly, reaching 6.2%. Dollar Tree and Dollar General are experiencing a decline of approximately 5% in midday trading, whereas Five Below and TJX Companies have both seen a decrease exceeding 1% for the day. Wells Fargo indicates that Dollar Tree is the most vulnerable, having historically experienced a more significant impact than its competitors when diesel prices surge.
It is estimated that the increased fuel costs will impact third-quarter profit by approximately $25 million, translating to a reduction of about 50 basis points in margin. The heightened expenses may exert further pressure on retail inflation.
