S&P Futures

S&P futures surged on Wednesday, recovering from previous declines, as traders assessed the implications of the Democrats gaining control of Congress alongside significant gubernatorial victories in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Futures associated with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by 724 points, representing an increase of 1.4%. S&P 500 futures exhibited an increase of 1%, mirroring the upward movement in Nasdaq-100 futures. The Democratic Party achieved a decisive victory, gaining control of Congress in the early hours. The AP has projected that Texas Democratic governor candidate Gina Hinojosa is the victor over Republican incumbent Greg Abbott. Hinojosa has announced a moratorium on data centers in the crucial technology hub.

Democratic control of the House and Senate may exert pressure on certain sectors of the market, particularly those stocks associated with the expansion of artificial intelligence, as noted by analysts on Wall Street. Investors are concerned that a significant victory for the Democratic Party may lead to increased regulations on data centers across the country. Stocks associated with AI have experienced a decline in recent weeks due to apprehensions regarding a deceleration in data-center expenditures. Elon Musk’s SpaceX experienced a decline of 4.8% in premarket trading, whereas Tesla shares decreased by 4.9%. Neocloud stocks CoreWeave and Nebius experienced declines of 3.6% and 1%, respectively. However, other segments of the technology sector experienced gains. Microsoft advanced by 0.3%, while Amazon experienced a climb of 1.1%, and Nvidia increased by 0.5%. Alphabet was the exception, trading approximately 0.4% lower.

U.S. health insurers and hospital operators experienced gains, with United Health increasing by 1.4%, Molina Healthcare rising by 6.3%, Centene adding 4.7%, and HCA Healthcare up by 1.44%. Renewable energy stocks experienced a significant uptick in premarket trading, contrasting with a decline in defence stocks. AMD shares initially surged by double digits in post-market action following the company’s report of third-quarter earnings and revenue that significantly exceeded analyst expectations, highlighting its pivotal role in the AI sector. The stock was last observed 6.3% elevated in premarket trading. In the broader market context, investors perceive that a blue wave could present a headwind, as it is likely to eliminate the prospect of further business-friendly policies such as tax breaks and may lead to increased scrutiny on sectors like banking. Andrew Slimmon of Morgan Stanley Investment Management said the result will bring “gridlock” to Washington, but added that the markets “like gridlock – they don’t like a party with too much power.”

Slimmon said that if the result increases the push for a resolution to the Middle East conflict, that may bring oil prices lower. “That’s been an issue for the Fed, and inflation, and part of the reason that rates are higher.” Renewable shares such as solar stocks experienced an uptick in post-market trading, driven by speculation that a Democratic majority in Congress would reverse policies implemented by President Donald Trump that were detrimental to the industry. The Invesco Solar ETF experienced an increase of 3% in trading on Robinhood. President Donald Trump may have helped ease pressure on the market a bit overnight by not challenging the midterm results in an interview. Trump told, “I think we’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll get along very well with them.”
