S&P futures exhibited minimal movement on Friday, following a significant rise in major indexes the previous day, coinciding with a decline in oil prices. Meanwhile, Warren Buffett has relinquished his position as Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, stating that “Father Time always wins.” In recent trading, futures for the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 exhibited increases of 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively, whereas futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average indicated a decline of 0.1%. Technology stocks propelled the three major U.S. indexes to significant gains on Thursday, following the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates for the first time in three years. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite, benchmark S&P 500, and blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average concluded the trading session with increases of 1.7%, 1.1%, and 0.6%, respectively.
Nonetheless, it was solely the Nasdaq that appeared set to conclude the week on a positive note. The index experienced an increase of 0.3% through Thursday, in contrast to the Dow and S&P 500, which saw declines of 1.5% and 0.3%, respectively. The Dow was on track to conclude lower for a third consecutive week, while the S&P 500 faced a second successive decline. Yesterday, the Roundhill Memory ETF and the broader iShares Semiconductor ETF closed approximately 4.5% and 3.5% higher, respectively, and indicated increases of 0.5% and 1% in premarket trading on Friday. Super Micro Computer, Intel, Marvell Technology, Micron Technology, Sandisk, Advanced Micro Devices, and Arm Holdings all were in the green before the bell after surging 5% or more yesterday. Google parent Alphabet was up more than 2% to pace Magnificent Seven stocks in early action, and the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF was almost 1% higher after closing up nearly 2% yesterday. However, shares of Apple ticked lower as the tech giant’s iPhone 18 models and other new products debuted.
Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway announced that legendary investor Buffett was stepping down as its Chairman, effective immediately, although he was named Chairman Emeritus “in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to Berkshire and its owners,” and will remain a member of the board. Howard Buffett, the son, will assume the role of Chairman. Warren Buffett, now at the age of 96, remarked that “Father Time always wins.” Elsewhere, crypto-tied stocks such as Robinhood Markets, Coinbase Global, and Strategy experienced an increase of approximately 3% as bitcoin was trading near $78,200, recovering from overnight lows of around $76,200. Oil prices experienced a further decline on Friday as traders expressed confidence that the supply disruptions caused by the closure of a Saudi Arabian pipeline would be temporary. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate prices experienced a decline of 0.5%, settling at $101.40 a barrel in recent trading. Meanwhile, Brent crude futures, recognised as the international benchmark, fell by 1.4% to $103.40.
The 10-year Treasury yield, a key indicator for various interest rates such as mortgages, corporate bonds, and other loans, was approximately 4.97% in recent trading, reflecting an increase of three basis points from Thursday’s close. Investor focus has shifted to the probable trajectory for interest rates. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders assign a 55% probability to the Federal Reserve increasing interest rates by a quarter-percentage point above the newly established range of 3.75% to 4% during the late-October meeting. Furthermore, there is an 89% probability of a similar increase occurring in December, following the U.S. midterm elections. The U.S. dollar index, which monitors the value of the greenback relative to a selection of foreign currencies, increased by 0.2% to reach 100.47. Gold futures increased by 0.4%, reaching $4,415 per ounce.
